Document Summary
Blood vessels: delivery system of dynamic structures that begin and end at heart, arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, veins, arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, veins carry deoxygenated blood toward the heart, only capillaries directly serve cells. Structures of the walls of arteries, capillaries and veins. Tunica intima: simple squamous epithelium lines lumen and all vessels, has intimate contact with the blood, consists of a subendothelial layer in vessels larger then 1mm in diameter, supports the endothelium. Tunica media: smooth muscle and sheets of elastic tissue, bulkiest layer in arteries, have the responsibility of maintaining blood pressure and circulation. Tunica adventitia (externa: outermost layer, composed mostly of collagen fibers, these protect, reinforce and anchor the vessel to its surrounding structures. In larger vessels this contains the vasa vasorum ( the vessels of the vessels ) which is the tunica externa"s own blood supply. Capillaries: smallest of the blood vessels, don"t function independently, consist of just a thin tunica intima.
