Document Summary

As a listener you have certain ethical obligations. When involved in interpersonal and therapeutic health related communication encounters the most commonly observed failure is the result of inattentive or inaccurate listening. When an individual fails to comprehend what is being said either explicitly or implicitly, misunderstandings may result that require prolonged discussion and negotiation before resolution is achieved. We can all agree that confusion often results when careful listening is not exercised. Note that receiving or hearing is not the same thing as listening: How can hearing what you expect to hear (a rather natural tendency) prevent you from listening openly to what is being said: (3 marks) When listening there are various factors that are taken into consideration such as body language, nonverbal cues, understanding, knowledge, and others. These cues are taken into consideration when trying to compare between passive and active types of listeners; these cues are what helps transform passive listeners into active listeners.
