1. What do sociologists mean when they say that “things are not what they seem” and what are
some examples? Sociology asks us to not automatically trust what we see. An example is a
picture of a bird on a TV, what you see is a bird but when you get closer you can see the
different colored pixels.

examples of this relationship. Personal choices also have an impact on the people around you,
your community and you work place.
3. What is sociology and what is the role of the sociological imagination? Sociology is the
systematic study of society using the sociological imagination. The sociological imagination is
tracing the linkages between individual experiences and larger sociocultural forces.
4. Who should be using the sociological imagination, and for what purpose? Max Weber, Karl
Marx, Emile Durkheim and August Compte because they all sought to understand social change.
5. How is sociology related to other disciplines? It studies all parts of society in a wider range of
theories and research.
6. What are the tools used to develop the sociological imagination?
7. What are the differences among positivist, interpretive, and critical approaches to theorizing?
Positivist approach emphasizes explanation and prediction. Interpretive approach emphasizes
the ways people come to understand themselves, others and the world around them. Critical
approach emphasizes the role power plays and the importance of knowledge being tied to
emancipation.
8. What are the core assumptions of the functionalist perspective, and what happens when society
changes too rapidly? Consensus and cooperation are fundamental to the maintenance of social
order.
9. What are the core assumptions of the conflict perspective and what is the role of praxis?
10. What are the core assumptions of the symbolic interactionist perspective, and how are
significant others and the generalized others involved?
11. What is the relationship between feminism and sociology, and why may it be more appropriate
to refer to feminist theoretical perspectives in the plural?
