Document Summary

How do we represent information in the brain: different areas represent different things. Split-brain patients: a model for understanding mental representation, representations specific to brain hemispheres. In our minds/brains we represent information about ourselves and our external environment: environment dangers, resources, etc. , what needs to be represented memory, emotion, pain, sense of body, sense of self, sense of space, vision, language. Person who has split-brain has their brain cut in half (split l/r hemisphere) with surgery named callosotomy: usually used on people who have bad seizures (in the past, rarely today) Both eyeballs usually get all the information from brain. In callosotomy, patients will only get information from contralateral side (opposite eye) Left hemisphere: represents stuff in right visual field, controls right hand, and controls speech. Right hemisphere: represents stuff in left visual field, controls left hand, and does not control speech. But can draw two separate shapes at the same time.
