Document Summary

Acculturation is the process by which people migrate to and learn a culture that is different from their original (or heritage) cultures. The study of acculturation is beset by unique difficulties and challenges. the literature on acculturation remains more contradictory, less coherent, and less empirically grounded than that for any other topic in this book. Reaching consistent conclusions on acculturation is difficult for researchers because acculturating individuals have such widely varying experiences. People move to cultures that vary in their similarity to their heritage culture. Different individuals have very different personalities goals, and expectations that affect their acculturation experiences. Few commonalities occur for all acculturating individuals, which makes it challenging to identify common patterns. Psychological adjustment acquiring a new language, new interpersonal and social behaviors, accustomed to new values, becoming member of a minority group and adjusting self-concept.
