Document Summary

Identify key properties (density, viscosity, silica content and temperature) of different types of magma. Magma is melted pre-existing rock below the earth"s surface and it reaches the surface through fractures and extruded as lava or explodes as pyroclastic material. Magma is melted rock in the earth while lava is molten rock at the earth"s surface. Intermediate magma has properties in between mafic and felsic magma: magma underground / lava overground, mafic is high temperature and low everything, intermediate is in between, felsic is low temperature and high everything. Magma eruption depends on the density of the magma. The lower the density of the magma, the higher the chance it will erupt. The lower density of the magma relative to the surrounding rocks causes it to rise. It will rise to the surface or a height at which the relative densities of the magma and the surrounding rocks are the same.
