Illustrate and label the layers of the earth. Inner core: outer cores, the mantle regions, the crust. The how and why of plate tectonics: plates are pushed apart by mid-ocean ridges not mantle convection. Subduction zones: occur when two plates of unequal density meet, resulting in one sinking below the other: can cause earthquakes, most frequently at low depths above 100 km deep. Sometimes earthquakes in subduction zones occur much deeper, but this is less likely as the plate begins to melt the deeper you go: trenches. Hotspots/mantle plumes: ex: hawaii-emperor island chain, magma plumes are fed by convection, hotspots shift over time as the plates move, In the ocean, this results in island chains. Ridge push and slab-pull: ridge push: movement of plates at ridges in propelled by sliding along the elevated lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, slab-pull: dense, subducting lithosphere pulls the plate along with it:
