Document Summary

Bacteria regulatory proteins sigma proteins (recognize diff promoter consensus). Have operons that are turned on/off at same time. Eukaryotes regulatory proteins regulatory transcription factors (activators/repressors), and general transcription factors. Regulatory sequences: regions of dna involved in controlling/regulating activity of genes (ex. Promoters: eukaryotic promoters have similarities to bacterial promoters. There are conserved sequences (consensus sequences) within each eukaryotic promoter. All eukaryotic promoters bounded by tata binding protein. Promoter-proximal elements (ppe): located upstream of promoter and transcription start site. Have sequences unique to specific genes, providing mechanism for eukaryotic cells to exert precise control over transcription. May be in an intron or in untranscribed sequences. Typical gene has several enhancer sequences, and each enhancer sequence has one regulatory transcription factor. Regulatory proteins: diff cell types express diff genes because they have diff histone modifications and contain diff regulatory proteins. Diff gene expression is results of production/activation of specific regulatory proteins.
