Document Summary

Quantitative- recorded measurements: observations can lead us to ask questions and propose hypothetical explanations called hypotheses which lead to predictions that can be tested by observation or experimentation. Covalent bond- the sharing of a pair of valence electrons by two atoms. Molecule- consists of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds. Polar covalent bond- one atom is more electronegative and the atoms do not share the electron equally. Ionic bonding- atoms sometime strip electrons from their bonding partners. After the transfer of an electron, both atoms have charges (ions). Chloride anion covalently bonded to one e- atom is attracted to another e- atom (usually or nitrogen atoms) also oxygen. Water is a polar molecule- polarity allows water molecules to form hydrogen bonds with each other. Water as a solvent- each ion is surrounded by a sphere of water molecules called a hydration shell. Dehydration reaction- two monomers bond together through the loss of a water molecule.
