The most significant event after the death of buddha was the reign of kind ashoka. He was a world conquer in the sense that he brought most of the indian subcontinent under his rule. He was known as a buddhist king. In the buddhist text we were given the impression that he was influenced by the. The last battle he engaged in was a vicious battle with the kalingas. Ashoka records that over a hundred fifty thousand people died. Though he won the battle, he was disgusted by the violence. Vowed that he would be a dhammaraja (righteous ruler) from then on. His reign was marked by many innovations for the time. Many wandering philosophers traveling the roads during that time, he built waystations for travellers along major routes. He did not abolish capital punishment but he gave the people who were sentenced to death time to go home and settle their affairs and say goodbyes.
