Provincial corrections (sentence 2 years and under) It is hard to agree on a sentence. We want consistency when dealing with how people should pay for their crimes. Variations in sentencing: (decision maker goals and values) Retribution - revenge goals/an eye for an eye. Denunciation - sends a message to the community. Deterrence - sends a message to the community to deter future offenders. Incapacitation - limit the capacity for someone to continue committing offences. This is what will happen if you commit this crime. Reparation - repay what you have done (e. g. fines) Restoration - fix the offender and bring them back into society. Power beyond retribution - an eye for an eye isn"t good enough. Want you to pay back + suffer for your crimes. There are different value clusters shown in the goals: Security values - retribution, denunciation, deterrence, incapacitation. Prior offences from the offender cause us to be less inclined to be benevolent.
