Often considered the antithesis of classical music . Pre-war popular music was dominated by big bands (think school bands, concert bands, etc); dominated since the 1930s. Brass used to be the main attraction , but has since moved into the sidelines (to be replaced by guitar, bass, piano, etc) Intended for dancing, so its rhythm was very clear and defined. The band leaders were considered the stars (their names were listed as the artist) as opposed to modern music which frequently list the lead vocalist as the artist. Vocalist focus was not a first time thing, it has happened in the past before the big band era. Wwii led to a significant change in western culture. Music industry post wwii divided into three categories: Popular (pop): white/middle class/urban (where the money is)
