Interview with phil zimbardo, director 1971 stanford prison study (one of the most controversial studies) Zimbardo explained what happened and why the experiment was cut short. Group of 24 young men were divided into 2 groups: guard and prisoner. Prisoners were given identity numbers, small dresses and ankle chains. The guards were given uniforms (military), night sticks, hand-cuffs, whistles and reflecting sunglasses (no eye contact). They were told they will run as they saw fit, as long as they refrain from abusing the prisoners physically. After 5 days, the experiment got out of control, the basement smelled like human fluid. Guards were asking inmates to simulate sex with each other. Inmates were on hunger strike, or depression, or both.
