The oceans and their well-being are integral to sustaining life on this planet. They are key components in global cycles and energy lows. One of the major diiculies working against sustainable human use of the oceans is our lack of understanding of oceanic ecosystems. Unique to land ecosystems: on land, biodiversity is higher in tropical zones than arcic zones. Producivity in biodiversity is dominated by locaion and zones of upwelling (deeper ocean waters going to the surface) Not only a food source, but is important to ishing communiies: social and cultural lifestyles. All ishes show a decline in average sizes: related to ishing and high mortality levels related to ishing, some ishing techniques target the largest individuals of a species. Leaves the smallest ones let to reproduce: breeds smaller sized ishes: shiting baseline: we don"t always have a full understanding of the natural size or state of how ish species were.
