This heat loss is the related to the ratio of body mass to surface area. Elephant = lots of body mass with relatively little surface area, where a smaller animal has little body mass to relatively greater surface area: basal metabolic rate increases with decreasing size. Animals like birds and bats have very fast metabolisms, while elephants have very slow metabolism. This is because the ratio between an organism"s surface area and volume increases as their mass decreases.
