Biol 241 introduction to applied microbiology. Anoxic environments arise as a result of aerobic microbial metabolism. Microbial ecology: the study of relationships between organisms and their surroundings (physical/chemical environment) Ecosystem: a community of organisms and their natural environment. Almost never see an individual microbe. If nutrients are available, microbes will divide to make a population of identical individuals. Community: populations of multiple organisms interacting. Guild: a group of organisms that carry out similar metabolic processes. Acid mine drainage: mines with a lot of pyritic ore (sulfides, iron available in aerobic environments) can support microbial growth. H2so4 produced, leaches metal (fe, cu, zn) into water, polluting rivers. Can also be used to mine copper in controlled ways in parts of the us and south america. Microbial inhabitants of freshwater lake ecosystems. Sunlight is the main energy source; its availability decreases as you go down the water column. Interactions between communities 1 and 2 is the carbon cycle.
