We find that perception of police effectiveness is not related to media consumption. The mass media reinforce existing attitudes or opinions. We find that respondents who report a high number of problems in their neighborhood are more likely to give negative evaluations of police effectiveness. In this study we find that african americans are more likely to give poor ratings of police effectiveness positive relationship between hours of television viewing and police effectiveness for respondents with prior police contacts. Simplification: when a story is new + unexpected + unpredictable, events reduced to a minimum # of themes to not lose viewer"s attention. Individualism: identify the individuals responsible for the crime, personalise the story + identify w/ the victim, criminal is constructed as a villain, stories w/ high levels of risk. Sex: over-reporting crimes w/ sexual nature, exaggerates fear for women.
