Every element of society works to meet a need to contribute to the whole of. All parts of an orderly society are integrated with each other but work society independently. Manifest function: the obvious and intended (e. g. safety) Mechanical solidarity: in small communities that have extreme dependence on each other, one mistake affects everyone = punishment is strong, swift, and even violent. Latent functions: less obvious and unintended (e. g. employment created) Organic solidarity: more complex societies where there is mutual dependence, one breaks the law and the whole machine doesn"t break down. How existing social arrangements always represent the powerful against the weaker members of society. The media discourages activity that will not benefit the rich, and those who are most punished are those who do not follow these laws. Some say police are a part of the working class- it"s a job and its dangerous, and others say they are just workers for the ruling class.
