Offenders are often well-educated, socially acceptable citizens: relates to sutherland and white collar crime. Most serious offences are committed by people in positions of power and authority (trusted criminals) Most decisions are made consciously, but corporate crime can be explained with risk analysis: calculating the negative side-effects and making a judgment based on safety demands, decision making can be clouded and distorted social-psychological processes. Negligence and incompetence play a role in the decision making process. Managers can pressure employees to take short-cuts on safety procedures in the interest of production. Harm is more likely to be a matter of incompetence, negligence, poor communication, faulty judgement and more. Many incidents of corporate deviance are complex and intricate events that are difficult to unravel so we should be careful of easy judgements and assumptions.
