Theory statement of how specific things are related. Social conflict theory groups with more power will use it to exploit those with less power. Symbolic interaction approach society is based on how people interact with each other. Structural-functionalism society is a structure with interrelated parts. Functionalism means the society as a whole in terms of its constituent elements; norms, customs, traditions. Theoretical approach basic image of the society that guides the thinking & research. Auguste comte society wants to be kept unified, when traditions break down. Herbert compares society to the human body; supports the structural-functional approach. Emile durkheim society & function: society has an objective existence apart from its individual members, basically people have to work together, division of labour weakens traditional bonds. Max weber - idealist approach: emphasizes the power of ideas to shape society, traditions & rationality.
