Around 4% of people have a learning disability. Ohi: other health impaired, about 1% of population. Rosa"s law: saw that mental retardation was now referred to as intellectual disabilities. Adaptive behaviour: skills people need to function on a day to day basis. Emotional disorder: feelings about oneself (typically poor) that can interfere with their outlook on life and their ability to learn. Behavioural disorder: inability to maintain relationships, inappropriate behavior/feelings and the tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears. Education for all handicapped children, 1975: first law. There are four times more boys than there are girls with ld"s. Boys are more physical and expectation pressures are high. Girls are under-diagnosed and display their symptoms differently. Many learning disabilities incorporate an attention problem of some sort. Under 6 years of age: developmental delay, no formal ld label let. Brain-injured child: received an injury or infection, impairments that disturb the learning process consequently.
