We study animals because if they experience a cognitive process, then humans most definitely will. Experimental method: human can follow instructions, can report subjective experiments, cheaper than animals but ethics are involved. Manipulate a variable under highly controlled conditions to see if this produces any changes in a second variable. Between subject design: different groups tested under different conditions. Within subject design: same group tested under multiple conditions. Dependent variable: one measured for changes *once or several times.
