Rock has an opposition to the status quo. Popular music has played a big role in the recent development of the western musical tradition. Difficult to define rock: some used rock and roll to describe music of late 1950s, or use to describe music after 1964, textbook: term rock: used to designate popular music, produced specifically for a youth audience. Rock history in the media: magazines such as rolling stone and mojo provide readers with useful info, cable networks such as vh1 and mtv offer profiles of artists, scholarly approach to rock is different. Info found in pop culture/media more so for entertainment, with purpose of generating. The fan mentality revenue, deliver what people want to believe. Research not main focus: fans, listen to music of particular artist, groups, ignoring those that do not interest them, students of rock: cannot ignore. Balanced study of rocks history and development.
