The man outside describes a hopeless post-war soldier (named beckmann) who returns from russia to discover that he has lost his wife and his home to another man. Every possible door that is opened for him gets slammed in his face. He discovers that he has no place in the new world that emerged after the war. The play ends with beckmann presumably committing suicide in the elbe river. The other one voice that speaks to him; optimistic side. A colonel beckmann asks him to take back the responsibility for the lives lost under his command during the war. Guilt and personal struggles coming back; coping with the past; surviving. Existing on the outside coping with loneliness; watching people move on. Second chances the elbe rejecting his first suicide. Glasses seeing the world through a lens different from everyone else. The book goes back and forth from the present time to the past.
