Some people argue that the 20th century started when the soviet block rose and ended when it fell. The age of: democracy, masses, america, etc. Something is defined in relation to something else (relativism) Quite different than previous ages, where people were more certain about things back then (science, morals, religion) Leads to larger philosophical questions: e=mc2. Previously, newton"s idea of the atom prevailed (atom as the smallest particle: the 20th century challenged that, everything is made of energy, there is no difference between anything, we are all made of the same stuff. People begin to try to fill that void (an example being hitler"s regime: multiculturalism: all cultures are, or could be, equal, post-modernism. Sigmund it"s probably a sex dream freud in the 20"s: the interpretation of dreams (1900) Shell shock, ego, oedipus complex, death wish . People began to look for a psychological explanation to things. Gave people an opportunity to really explore their subconscious.
