Horse has an excellent memory: better than a humans. Relates to survival and may be discussed without referring to the concept of intelligence. Learning abilities range from habituation to conceptualisation (in humans) Context specific: horse can learn to fear with a specific location. Lack of performance in learning task does not necessarily reflect lack of learning ability. Young horses are more curious and motivated. Horses managed in groups on pasture learn better than hose kept in stalls. Breed differences and individual differences within breeds. Males are faster and make less mistakes than females. Innate behaviours initiated or increased by presence of another animal carrying out those behaviours. Ability of one animal to draw attention of another animal to location of reinforcement opportunity. Are interventions that may cause the horse to be stressed. Social challenges: leaving the social group, taking the lead etc. Environmental challenges: leaving home, leaving the track, entering small spaces etc.
