Document Summary

Systems biology: the systematic study of complex interactions in biological systems, to better understand the entirety of processes. Reduction: isolated models, a good level of control over any variables, but may not have the same outcome as it would in real life. Integration: less control over variables, but offers a proper outcome in vevo. Isolated (reduction): yes the fat is oxidized when mixed with leptin, therefore leptin administration = weight loss. However: this was conducted in the absence of 100s of other hormones that could affect this outcome. Integration approach determines that overweight people are leptin resistant, and therefore this would not cause weight loss. Single leg extension (reduction): mitochondria limits vo2 max here, because only small amounts of blood is required and therefore it is easy for the heart to supply extra oxygen to the muscle. Whole body exercise (integration): vo2 max limited by cardiac output blood has to bring extra oxygen to the entire body.
