A german monk, who after a visit to italy, was disgusted by the corrupt, excessive and indulgent wealth of the catholic church. He wrote the 95 theses in protest, scolding the pope for not only the extravagant luxuries of the church but selling of indulgences as well. His work aimed to tell readers that the bible is the central religious authority, and that humans may reach salvation only through faith and not through indulgences and deeds. Martin luther"s writings spoke to a growing unrest against the catholic church, sparking the protestant.
