Textbook and CDs are available on the library website
When listening to a piece of music:
What are the instruments that you hear?
What is the speed of the music? And does it change throughout the song?
What is the mood of the music?
What us this music for? For a funeral, party, wedding, etc.
-ethnomusicology- the study of music in culture
-People many years ago used to only hear an hour or 2 of music per week at church
3 main/major categories that you can generally put all music into:
classical music- played by professionals
-string quartet, orchestra music, flute, cello, solo piano, violin, etc.
-search classical music or look in the record store for classical
-classical really refers to a particular period of time- European art music between
1750 and 1825- the classical period- one of the shortest periods that we identify in
the history of art music
-popular definition of the music is incorrect
-music was developed or created among a system of patronage- means
someone is paying for it- could be composers that are full time employees of a
church, etc.
-church is responsible for a lot of what music is today
-patronage could also be aristocracy/royals- job of ppl was to produce music for
the presence of royalty
-highly competition to get a job like that so they must have been the best of
the best- classical music has been brought to such a high level cuz they
didn't have to farm or anything else with a job that payed that well
-today the government gives grants to keep these orchestras going
-corporate sponsorship- support or payment from an outside source
-different country's classical music sounds completely different
folk music- music of the people- coming from the german word folk meaning people

-usually done by amateurs
-not going to find the true definition of folk music on iTunes
-singers with a guitar are what the west calls folk music- James Taylor is not a
folk musician but he’s a popular musician
-highly sophisticated music payed by the upper classed
-simple music being payed for by the ppl who do it- usually not done by
professional musicians- usually done by farmers or lower class workers, etc- for
an expression of their lives- can be religious, love songs, etc.
-usually made to serve a social function
popular music-any form of music that’s selling a high amount of record sales
-rock, pop(ular), hip hop, rnb, country, etc. Its all popular
-commercial industry to make money
-U2- famous for their music for the people but they’re only popular cuz of the
record companies
-motivated to sell as many records as possible
-pop music from around the world has all been somewhat americanized and whats popular in
America
-In the west, these terms have been stolen by the record company and they don't mean what we
think they mean
Final Exam- NOT CUMULATIVE
-wont ask questions specifically about the first day terminology but you should know it cuz itll
help understand everything else
Concert Review Assignment
-give an opinion and then give some reasons why you think that- you could have a combination
of both
-MINIMUM 1000 word (not including the title)
Listening Journal Assignment
-write about what you're hearing in the music primarily
-speed, instruments, lil bit of info about what you're hearing in class, a lil bit of an
opinion
Exams in 3 parts
-MC
-Written response- styles of music talked about in class and write everything you can
remember about that music
-history, styles, instruments
-Listening- in MC format
-play some tracks over the speakers and ask 2 things- 1. what is the style/genre of music
