Carrot-and-stick approach extrinsic motivation is driven by external factors such as awards and higher compensation or punishment such as demotion and lay-off. Drive theory physiological disruptions to homeostasis produce drives to behave a certain way; pushes and organism into action (internal tension that motivates an organism to reduce this tension)
