Methods of Weed Control
5 Methods generally recognized:
1) Prevention (sanitation + containment)
2) Mechanical
3) Biological (bio-herbicides, RNAi technologies)
4) Chemical
5) Cultural
Prevention: measures taken to avoid the introduction, establishment and spread or
specific weeds in areas where they do not currently occur
- use of a Certified Seed reduces but does NOT eliminate weed seeds
Seeds Act and Regulations
- Canadian Food Inspection Agency responsible (federal)
- Ensures seeds sold in, imported into and exported from Canada meet standards
for quality and are labeled and are registered prior to sale in Canada.
Weed Seeds Order:
- Class 1 Prohibited Noxious Weed Seeds
Class 2 Primary noxious weed seeds
Class 3 secondary noxious weed seeds
Class 4 secondary noxious weed seeds
Class 5 noxious weed seeds, Class 6 other weed seeds
Certified Seed
does not mean weed free
certificate of analysis, outlines. All certified seeds come with a label
o species
o # of weed seeds present
0 tolerance for any prohibited noxious weed seeds (Weed Seeds Order) in any
pedigreed seed
o however, different degrees where it’s allowable
Certified seed tag guarantees seed has gone through all proper multiplication,
inspection and cleaning processes to ensure a pure product
o Seed that is true to type
o a pure variety access to newest plant genetics
o more uniform germination for stronger competition in the field
o easier harvest higher yields
- Seeds Act and Weed Control act are not the same.
- At Breeder, Select and Foundation levels, there is almost 0 tolerance for any
weed seed content
o tolerance levels increase in the Registered and Certified classes
- 0 tolerance for any prohibited noxious weed seeds (Weed Seeds Order) in any
pedigree seed.
Re-use of seed
- wheat, barley + other cereals usually re-sown
- canola, peas, special crops usually purchased seed
- seed cleaning an OPTION for producers who re-use their seed
- “Brown bag” seed (sold in a non-certified seed manner) may be a source of new
weeds
