We will only study external respiration in this chapter (not covering internal respiration). Hippocrates: father of medicine; said that primary purpose of breathing is to cool the heart. One of the few systems in the body that we can consciously control. Purpose of the respiratory system: do not want co2 to accumulate in the cells. Generation 1-16: conducting airways that don"t take part in gas exchange (anatomic dead space). Not all air we inhale takes part in gas exchange. Gas exchange starts in generation 17; and majority of gas exchange takes place in generation. Alveoli has more surface area for gas exchange. Cartilage prevents the collapsing of the trachea and bronchi. Increasing external pressure bronchioles collapse before alveoli resulting in trapping of gas in the alveoli.
