It allows for an easy and focused way to set expectations for what will be communicated and how it will be communicated. Sudden and without any warning, a patient may struggle to breathe. Reassure patient that you are there to help. Stay in the room while calling for assistance and emergency equipment. Make sure you have an oral airway, o2 and a working suction set-up on hand, since the patient"s condition may rapidly deteriorate and progress to cardiopulmonary arrest. Complete obstruction can lead to rapid suffocation and death. If the heimlich maneuver doesn"t work, be ready to assist with emergency tracheostomy or endotracheal intubation. If obstruction is caused by spasms or edema. Tightening of the larynx (laryngospasm) or bronchioles (bronchospasm), along with edema, are part of the inflammatory response.
