NURS341 Study Guide - Final Guide: Esophagectomy, Smoking Cessation, Defecation
Document Summary
When you are discharged from the hospital you may have a feeding tube in your abdomen. This tube may or may not be used for feeds. It is very important to flush the tube twice a day with 30-60 mls of water to keep the tube from plugging. You will be taught to care for the tube and your incision before you go home: after flushing your tube, wash the syringe with warm soapy water, you may apply light gauze around the tube. Home care may be arranged to assist with dressing changes: homecare will be arranged for patients going home with tube feeds. If your tube falls out proceed immediately to the emergency room. Drainage or discharge: you may notice small amounts of yellowish discharge from around your tube. This is normal if less than one teaspoon: report any unusual discharge pr pain to your doctor. Examples are greenish, foul smelling or bloody colored drainage.
