Dialysis review-> 1 or 2 questions on exam. Maintain renal function by alternative methods: separation of large solutes from smaller ones through use of selectively permeable mem, retain essential solutes for the body and excrete toxic waste products. Remove poisons or drug overdose: chronic condition. Blood is filtered through an artificial kidney machine. Machine= cellophane tubules that act as semipermeable mem. Artery-> connected to tube-> blood goes through cellophane tube= dialyzer-> filtration-> clean blood returned to the patient. Role of nurse: need to monitor machine (dialyzer and dialysate bath) or clotting, air embolism, blood leaks, and contamination. Fluid inside machine= dialysate bath: care and maintain the *vascular access device. Some patients can"t get a good artery to connect w/ the machine. Getting good site-> very important: nutrition and fluid intake control and provide education to patients. Goes through the abdomen and uses peritoneal mem. Indications: for patients who are unwilling or unable to go for hemodialysis or renal transplantation.
