Document Summary

In some cultures music is passed down through written records that stretch back thousands of years. Other forms of music are studied through oral performances. Music is in a constant state of change. Greatest influence on music around the world is that exerted by western classical and popular music. Music is a reflection of the society that makes it. Music is not a universal language; it is a universal-like language, as it distinguishes us as humans. In the u. s, classical music is treated as an elitist activity. Performances are very formal, audiences are polite and listen silently. Society treats music of the past with great reverence. Most music that is performed today is between 100-250 years old. Women are becoming more accepted in society as composers/musicians. Outside of opera, women were rarely seen on the classical stage. The way music functions in a society is an important indicator of how that society is formed/operates.
