Document Summary
Reduction-oxidation reactions are electron transfer reactions: these two steps occur simultaneously. Reduction: gaining of electrons, oxidizing agent. Oxidation: loss of electrons, reducing agent. Oxidation state: the change in the imaginary charge the atom would have, if all the valence electrons in the bonds are assigned to the more electronegative atom in a molecule or ion. Then connect the half cell by a salt bridge that passes ions and a wire attached to the electrodes to complete the circuit: cations go to the cathode; anions go to the anode. Cell potential (ecell: the driving force of a galvanic cell is the voltage difference between 2 half cells, also called the voltage of the cell or electromotive force, ecell > 0. The more positive it is, the more work the cell can do: ecell = 0. Reaction has reached equilibrium and the cell can do no more work: ecell < 0.
