Chapter 1 racism and racists: some conundrums. A term coined in the 1930s in response to the nazi project: the nazis believed that jews were a disinct race and posed a threat to the aryan race. Ani-semiism: arguable one of the oldest racisms, the longest hatred , came into being in the late 1870s. Jews have been paricularly prone to vicimizaion because of their atempts to retain a disinct idenity and their refusal to assimilate. In the context of this ime, the cultural pracice commitment to judaism funcioned as a racial marker. Who counts as jewish: immigraion policies of the israeli state accept only those who have jewish mothers as authenic jews. This is a strictly biological deiniion: in nazi germany, one had to have 3 jewish grandparents to be classiied unambiguously as a jew. Those who were 1/4th and someimes even half jewish could be allowed to be considered german ciizens provided they did not pracice judaism or marry.
