Pilgrimage - was a long standing practice, of visiting holy places to improve one"s faith. Exact words not known, but much like: Urged reconquest of christian territory taken by muslims. Promised lands and rights would be protected. Vow signified by wearing a cross on clothing. Ordered soldier to fight muslims to take back their holy land. Only wanted trained fighters, with wealth to ensure that they were suitable for the task. They had to get written permission from priest and wives to let them go.
