Ch 8 complex cognitive processes: metacognition: awareness of one"s own cognitive machinery/thinking processes (reasoning, prob solve) Executive control process: process like selective attention, rehearsal, elaboration, and organization metacognitive skills b/c they can be used to regulate cognition. 3 kinds of knowledge: declarative, procedural, and self-regulatory. Also includes knowledge about the value of applying cognitive strategies in learning. 3 skills to think and learn: plan, monitor, and evaluate. As kids grow older, they"re more able to exercise executive control over strategies (dev around age 5-7) Eg: are more able to determine if they understood the instructions. Learning strategies: flexible outlines for accomplishing learning goals; an overall plan of attack. Students must be cognitively engaged in order to learn focus attention on relevant aspects of material. Must invest effort by making connections, elaborate, translate, invent, organize, reorganize in order to think and process deeply. Focus on: attention&effort, process info deeply, monitor understanding.
