Document Summary
The borobudur temple compound is located in central java, indonesia and is the largest. Created between 750 and 842 ce, this shrine contains a vast amount of art located all over the monument. In regards to what this art means, very little remains disputed. Because buddhism is so well understood, the stories and tales that are depicted are also well understood. The objective of this essay will be to discuss what the art represents, from the relief panels to the buddha statues adorned all over the monument. Another area of focus will pertain to the somewhat disputed meaning behind the monument itself. Figure 2 position of narrative relief stories in borobudur (kartapranata 2011).
