• What is Health Psychology?
• What Do You Know About Health Psychology So Far?
True or False?
1. Most deaths in Canada are caused by infectious diseases or by poor hygiene - F
2. A problem that is psychosomatic is one that starts in the mind and is expressed in
the body - F
3. Hypnosis can speed healing - F
4. About 80% of people with HIV are aware they have been infected - F
5. Eating lean fish can reduce risk of heart attacks - F - eating fatty fish reduces the
risk
6. Suppressing negative emotions cannot reduce risk of cancer - T
7. Behavioural medicine is the health care field devoted to decreasing the incidence
and severity of medical problems through psychological techniques - T - Behavioral
medicine is the more clinical side of things
• The Changing Field of Health
• As early as the 1900s, death caused mostly by acute, infectious diseases
• People were dying due to things like:
• Pneumonia
• Tuberculosis
• Diseases causing diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems
• Bubonic plague, measles, diphtheria
• It's not that people don't die from these diseases nowadays but it's much less
common, now death is much more likely to happen due to chronic diseases
• Now death more likely to be caused by chronic diseases
• Leading Causes of Deaths in 1900 vs. 2014
Grey bars: what was happening in the 1900s - in the 1900s they didn't have good records
so we don't know for certain what happened but we do know that people were more likely
to die from flu/other diseases labelled above - it's not people weren't dying from heart
diseases/cancer we just didn't have enough knowledge perhaps
The public health agency of Canada is underfunded

Nowadays people die from chronic diseases such as cancer heart attacks
We know that there were some big changes and the question is why did these changes
happen
• What Led to These Changes?
The changes did not happen because of medication, that's a myth. Medicines are helpful
but the data shows that medicines alone did not cause change in everything but rather
changes in public health caused the changes ex. We started vaccinating people, offered
safer drinking water/milk, better nutrition and better sewage disposal
• Changes in Public Health Practices
• Nearly universal vaccination
• Safer drinking water and milk
• Better nutrition
• Better sewage disposal - sewage would flow through the streets before
Things haven't changed as much as we think though. Ex: not everyone has safer
drinking water - not everyone in Canada has access to safe drinking water ex.
Aboriginal/Indigenous communities, rural areas in the North
We see that typically in rural areas, areas in North, communities with aboriginals
have unfair aspects - some get universal safe water, vaccination etc while other do
not
• Changes in Medical Care are important but they are
• While impressive/imp but they are less important in increases in life expectancy. If we
go to a place where they don't have the above mentioned things and you want to
increase life expectancy and have limited resources then you would want to focus on
these things; vaccination, safe water, nutrition, better sewage system
• These changes led from people dying from diseases to people, yes getting sick, but
not dying from it and that's because we have a safer env but also because if needed,
meds are available and now we have people dying from long term things
• Hence safe env + meds both
• How is Health Defined?
• First model we will study is the: The traditional biomedical model in thi model health is
defined as the absence of disease or disability for ex if you have Normal lung capacity + no
lung cancer (no disease in your longs)= you have healthy lungs - don't have disease and
have health
• This definition is limited
• Another, we have moved to a more modern definition: (still it's from 1946)
• Health is a state of oplete physial, etal, ad soial well-being, and not merely
the asee of disease or ifirity World Health Orgaizatio, 1946 - it's a bit of a
