Phonemes the elementary units of meaningful sounds used to produce languages; they distinguish meaning. The first step in children"s language learning is phonological development. Phonological development- the acquisition of language about the sound system of a language. Morphemes- the smallest units of meaning in a language, composed of one or more phonemes. Morphemes, alone, or in combination, constitute words. The other indicating more than one of them. The second component in language acquisition is semantic development.
