Largely arbitrary system of communication that combines symbols (words or gestures) in rule-based ways to create shared meaning. Enables us to express thoughts and feelings, facilitates interactions with others. Automatic: interpreting language usually require little attention, enabling us to perform other tasks like walking, cooking, etc without speech getting in the way. 4 levels of analysis that must coordinate in order for us to communicate effectively. Syntax: grammatical rules that govern how we compose words into a meaningful strings. Extra linguistic information: elements of communication that aren"t part of the content of language but are critical to interpreting its meaning, such as facial expressions & tone of voice category of sounds our vocal apparatus produces. Phonemes (examm) influenced by elements of out vocal tract, including our lips, teeth, tongue placement, vibration of the vocal cords, opening and closing of our throat, and other physical manipulations of our throat and mouth.
