NSE 12: Study Guideline
WEEK 1

Identify who the CNO is and describe their purpose.
- Regulatory body for nursing in Ontario
- Purpose: protect the public interest, sets standards of practice and sets criteria for becoming a
nurse
- Note: every nurse must be a member of CNO

Examine the (CNO) Professional Standards:
a. Identify & describe the seven Standards.
Accountability:
maintaining competence and refraining from performing activities which he/she is not
competent
Continuing Competence:
engaging in learning process to enhance his/her practice
Ethics:
identifying personal values and ensuring they do no not conflict with professional practice
Knowledge:
seeking and reviewing research in nursing, health sciences, and related disciplines
Knowledge Application:
identifying/ recognizing normal or unexpected client responses and taking
actions appropriate
Leadership:
role-modelling professional values, beliefs, and attributes

Illustrate how the components of self-concept affect communication:
- Biases what a person focuses on
- What a person respects from others
- What a person remembers in conversation
Ø If someone has self-concept cognitive distortions occur (faulty perception of situation)

Explain how a nurse, positively or negatively, can affect a client’s self-concept:

- Empathy: understanding where pt is coming from, being self-aware of actions
- Professional Intimacy: i.e. bed baths, catheterizations
