GMS 401 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Quality Function Deployment, Mass Customization
Document Summary
The design process involves market/compeitor analysis, goal seing (product, performance, cost, quality), quality funcion deployment, concept design, product speciicaion, and building and tesing prototypes. The idea of new or a redesigned product can come from customers, employees, suppliers, compeitors, and the research and development department. The stage of life cycle of a product inluences the nature of its redesign. Using standard parts and common modules saves operaing costs, but it is possible to provide some mass customizaion by allowing customers opions on modules and postponement. The reliability of well-designed product has to be extensively tested and improved. It may be cheaper to design robust products that perform consistently in varied producion and use condiions. It is faster and less costly for the product team to perform both product and process designs concurrently. Cad has helped reduce the design ime signiicantly. It is cheaper overall to design products that have fewer parts and are easier to manufacture and assemble.
