Document Summary

Discuss/define the 2 major eating disorders included in the dsm system. The two major eating disorders are bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa. These two disorders are included in the dsm system. Both of these eating disorders are a result of psychological, biological and sociocultural factors. Both disorders share some symptoms, however these disorders are characterized by different behaviours and patterns. Nervosa as defined in the text is characterized by maintenance of an abnormally low body weight, distortions of body image and intense fear of gaining weight. Contrary to people belief, people who suffer from anorexia do often have cravings and they like food. However, they are repulsed by what food represents, which to them is weight gain. This results in micro-managing their appetite and limiting the quantity of food they consume. Some effects of anorexia are amenorrhea (in females), osteoporosis, anemia, and seizures just to name a few.
