Generally associated with damage to the left inferior frontal gyrus, part of left cerebral hemisphere near the front of brain. Mid 19th century, french physician paul broca patient who could not speak but could understand language. Broca removed brain found large lesion in frontal lobe of left side of brain: wernicke"s aphasia: deficit in speech comprehension without a loss in speech production. German physician carl wernicke found patients could speak, but speech produced made no sense & seemed to have difficulty understanding what was said to them.
