Produce children, long term economic, social, emotional unit. Male stream: (freud) hordes, big "families" all men have sex with all the females. Domestication/ownership concepts begin to unfold = land & animals. After wwi, more women began to work and they wanted to. "social injuries" leading cause of child death in canada. Result of situational circumstances, might have been prevented. Unemployment, job lay off, early retirement, retirement set this family form in place. Traditionally due to death but now separation or divorce. Better off financially, but face same challenges are single female parents. Children over 10 observed to "sabotage" the marriage. Takes 4-7 to begin to feel like a "real family" "practice" marriage to see how it would be. Originally because wife died, now more common because of separation. Wife works until birth of child, then home until child grows a little bit, then re-enters work force "re-entry woman" Benefit of outside work blended with fulfillment of raising children.
