Social inluence occurs when one person (the source) engages in some behavior (such as persuading, threatening, promising or issuing orders) that causes another person (the target) to behave diferently from how he or she would otherwise behave. Aitude change: a change in the target"s belief and aitudes about some issue, person, or situaion: aitude change is a fairly common result of social inluence. Compliance: occurs when the target"s behaviour conforms to the source"s request or demands. Some social inluence eforts produce both aitude change and compliance. Open inluence: the atempt is readily apparent to the target. Target understands that someone is trying to change his or her aitudes or behaviours. Manipulaive inluence: the atempt is hidden from the target. The use of persuasive communicaion to change the target"s aitudes or beliefs. The use of threats or promises to gain compliance.
